What makes the capitol special

The South Dakota State Capitol was finished in 1910. It features a 161-foot dome covered in gold leaf. Inside, the terrazzo floors have special blue tiles hidden within the design. The grounds include a reflecting pool and a memorial garden with sculptures honoring veterans.

How the city got its name

Pierre is named after Pierre Chouteau Jr. He was a 19th-century fur trader who helped build business along the Missouri River for the American Fur Company.

Why this city became the capital

Pierre became the capital when South Dakota became a state in 1889. It replaced Yankton, which had been the capital of the Dakota Territory. Even though Pierre is a small city, it was chosen because it is in the center of the state and sits on the Missouri River, making it easy to reach.
